DLM Leather Museum Offenbach

The Deutsche Leder Museum (German Leather Museum) - or simply DLM - was opened in the leather city Offenbach in 1917. Since then more than 30.000 objects have come together that document "the leather production and leather processing of all times and all peoples" - as was said at the time. In 1939 the DLM moved into its new home in the reconstructed "Städtische Lagerhaus", a city warehouse, a classicist building in the west of Offenbach’s city. The address today is: Frankfurter Str. 86 or Platz des 8. Mai 1945.
What its founder, Prof. Hugo Eberhardt originally laid out as a collection of historic examples for a flourishing leather goods industry quickly developed into a multi-section museum of global, anthropological standard. Thus the world-wide oldest decorated leather container was purchased in 1936: the find from el-Gebeleyn in Egypt has its origin in a pre-dynastic burial and held a shaman’s or priest‘s bone tools. The container is modelled over a clay core and decorated with fine blind-embossing. It dates back to the Naquada culture and is over six thousand years old. To this day Tuareg craftswomen create similar rawhide containers as jewellery holders in Agadez/Niger.
In addition to the regular presentation of the most important items of the collection the DLM organizes specialized exhibitions of international contemporary art, crafts and from the ethnological and cultural history sectors.
Furthermore theme-based festivals are celebrated in the museum, for example about the culture of Japan, but also Romania, Croatia and many other countries. For these the additional facilities, like the special exhibitions hall, the theatre, cafeteria, lobby, inner court, etc., are used, with the aim of addressing all senses of the visitor.
All around the year an expansive pedagogical programme offers theoretical and practical events for children and workshops for adults in special workrooms or - in the summer - in the outside area behind the museum building.
From spring to autumn the many especially attractive events are presented on the large square in front of the DLM, among others a market with African crafts during the "International Museum Day", the "Indian Summer Night" with tipi, campfire and authentic dances or the "Night of Museums in Frankfurt and Offenbach", when up to 4000 visitors have strolled through the DLM.
A gift shop completes the wide range the museum has to offer its visitors: besides scientific publications and books to focal points of the collections there are also bags and shoes by modern top designers, ethnic crafts like jewellery or oriental foot-wear, charming products of small African cooperatives like toys out of recycled materials, musical instruments, textiles, etc.
