Shoes: 3500 years of footwear
|
|
Shoes from around the world, the tools of the trade and the artefacts of cobbler's
guilds have naturally been part of the German Leather Museum's collections since
the museum was founded. After several decades during which several complete
collections of shoes had been acquired, it became clear that the section needed
a separate home, and the German Shoe Museum was established in 1952.
A tour of the Shoe Museum, which in its current form has separate sections for
European shoe design and footwear from other parts of the world, reveals an
inexhaustible diversity of fashions extending over 2000 years of footwear design.
Besides their main function of protecting the feet, shoes have always reflected
the social position of their wearer. In our own century they have also become
a personal expression of lifestyle.
The German Shoe Museum and its counterparts in Europe and Canada have formed
the "Calceus" network as a forum for yearly meetings and a vehicle
for information exchange (further information on request).
