The non-European collections include boots, shoes, slippers, "ankle straps" and sandals from all nations of the world. Geographically, the collections extend from the Arctic and the Americas to the Near East, and from Asia to Australia. The oldest shoes in the non-European collection come from 18th Dynasty Egypt (around 1400 B.C.) and the Christian Copts of the Nile Valley (2nd to 8th century A.D.). Peruvian sandals (5th to 8th century) and ancient Persian and Anatolian boot-footed vessels are among the most notable exhibits. Richly ornamented slippers and stilts from the Near East and the very skillfully embroidered boots and shoes for stilts from 19th century China are an additional aesthetic highlight.
