With its participatory approach, Deutsches Ledermuseum is exploring new avenues and moving towards a more open museum by encouraging people to get more actively involved. From 5 November 2023 to 11 February 2024 visitors could slip into the role of curator and help decide what is shown in an exhibition – this is exactly what YOUR MUSEUM Revisited the Collection invites you to do.

The unique collection included an Asian shadow figure, a medieval coffret, pearl-decorated moccasins, Art Deco handicrafts, roller skates from the 1950s and curiosities such as leather postcards and a powder horn with thorny skate leather. If a favourite item was chosen, it could also be accompanied by memories or anecdotes.

Visitor vote: 99 objects, 3 months, 33 favourite objects

99 exhibits were on display until 11 February 2024 to become the visitors' favourite object. At the voting station, visitors voted for their favourite exhibit with the help of a sticky dot. The eleven exhibits with the most votes from each of the three voting rounds will become part of the exhibition from Saturday, 16 March 2024.

Voting Invitees

The innovative project kicks off with selected objects by Susanne Haus (President of the Frankfurt-Rhine-Main Chamber of Crafts), Georg Picard (Managing Director of Lederwaren Picard) and Lisa Frisch and Katharina Pfaff (frisch Beutel, label for sustainable bags). They all have a special relationship with leather as a material or with the Museum. The selected exhibits, including the personal commentary of the invitees, can be seen in the museum from Sunday, 5 November 2023.

Instagram vote: 14 objects, 7 weeks, 7 favourite objects

From 21 September 2023 to 14 December 2023, people could vote on the museum's social media channels at two-week intervals between two objects that have at least one thing in common. A total of 14 objects competed against each other. All of the followers' favourite objects have been part of the exhibition since January 2024.

Voting Museum team

In a final step, the museum team will vote on their favourite objects. On International Museum Day, Sunday 19 May 2024, the exhibition space will then be fully furnished and offer a variety of insights into the incomparable treasures of the German Leather Museum until Sunday 11 August 2024.

EThe exhibition has been made possible thanks to generous funding from Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain.
